UN Says US is Stingy

Interesting:

“The United States, at the president’s direction, will be a leading partner in one of the most significant relief, rescue and recovery challenges that the world has ever known,” said White House deputy press secretary Trent Duffy.

But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being “stingy” with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll give you a call when I care what you think. Sheesh.

In response to Mr. Egeland’s comments, Mr. Duffy pointed out that the United States is “the largest contributor to international relief and aid efforts, not only through the government, but through charitable organizations. The American people are very giving.”

An interesting point to make. When people pay less taxes, they have more money for themselves to decide what to do with - if they paid more taxes, that’d be more money for the government to decide how to use. When people have more money, they will be more inclined to donate to charity. Kind of a double edged thing, is it not?

I’m sorry but I agree with the UN. If the US can afford to spend $X Billion on a war, they can easily afford to give more to those really in need.

  2. Michael says:

I don’t think the UN should be telling the US to raise taxes in order to have more money for those in need.

It should be up to the individual to give money to Organizations who know how to best spend the money in these situations.

The U.N. is doing what it has always done, stick its nose where it doesn’t need to and ignore the problems that it needs to focus on.

What really gets me is that the U.N. only wants the U.S. involved when it suits their (the UN’s) needs/wants. When U.S. involvement does not favor them then they condemn it. This is not a selective process for the U.S. We are not going to be a nation that only steps in when conforms to what other people want and then act like nothing is wrong when we are directly affected. The world can hate us all they want because when they need us they will come back asking that we help. (The French being the best example of this)
