Dolphins Head Coach Search and Minorities
Search for new Dolphins coach will include minorities
…
It’s questionable how much longer Saban will be willing to wait for a Dolphins offer because of the damage being caused to LSU’s 2005 recruiting class by having his name linked to an NFL job. One top junior college player already has canceled plans to orally commit to LSU and now may sign with Southern California because of uncertainty about Saban’s future.
The Dolphins, though, have an extremely limited pool of minority candidates to immediately choose from because assistant coaches on other NFL teams are off-limits for interviews until the season ends Jan. 2. The top two minority college coaches also don’t appear viable options.

The Dolphins could opt to speak with one of the five minority assistants on their coaching staff. But considering how media reports have clearly painted Saban as the Dolphins’ top choice, a token meeting would not cast the franchise in a positive light.
…
Fritz Pollard Alliance Chairman John Wooten, who heads a group of black coaches and NFL executives seeking more minorities in those positions, said Thursday that he was alarmed reading so many media reports already linking the Dolphins with Saban. But Wooten also is optimistic the Dolphins will conduct a wide-ranging search that would last into January.
“Wherever there is an opening, we expect the club to carry out the procedure exactly the way it’s laid out and that consideration of a [minority] candidate is very serious,” said Wooten, a former NFL player and executive. “I use the word `serious’ because one thing we’re all concerned about is nobody wants to be a token interview. That is something that is totally humiliating and unacceptable from every point of view.”
…
“I’m not trying to tell the Dolphins who to hire,” Wooten said. “I’m simply saying to follow the guidelines. They will get the best guy because there are some good coaches out there available. I know there are top-quality assistant coaches in the NFL who are just waiting for the opportunity to be interviewed who are both black and white.”
I understand the rule and it’s not too bad. But, things change when you have a hot property. Saban is arguably the biggest NFL coaching prospect in the college ranks. You can’t wait and play games by interviewing people you aren’t really interested in. You know that the Dolphins want him because he is such a hot property and the job is his for the taking.
So, how can such a meeting with a minority candidate NOT be a token meeting? It IS a token meeting and there is no shame in it. From all indications, we want Saban and it is Saban’s job. Any interviews are simply backups and there is nothing wrong with that. There is nothing wrong with being honest and hiring the guy you want to hire. In Saban’s case, it is well justified. Again, he is a hot property.
