ALCS Game Two Running Recap

I am going to try my hand at a running recap this evening. That is, I’ll be updating this entry as game two of the ALCS happens with the recap of what si happening and some of my thoughts. So, stay tuned and feel free to comment.

This should be a good game (as any Red Sox and Yankees ALCS game). Pedro vs. Lieber. Let’s go Yankees.

Top 1st: Damon grounds weakly to Olerud for the first out. Bellhorn pops out to Jeter for the second. Lieber puts one up and in, not really that far into where he was standing, but close nonetheless. Manny makes a look… and proceeds to strikeout to end the inning.

Bottom 1st: As Jeter comes up, they show a banner at the stadium: “Captain October”. I like that. He walks on 4 pitches. Jeter steals second on the first pitch. Safe as Bellhorn drops the ball. It takes Pedro 7 pitches to throw his first strike. Pedro hits A-Rod (barely). Similar area to where Lieber threw the pitch to Manny. Sheffield drops one in front of Damon in center (single) and Jeter scores from second. 1-0 Yankees. Godzilla K’s looking to make the first out for the Yanks. Bernie makes it back to back strikeouts looking for out number 2. The first pitch to Posada is high and a little bit in, but not as much as the pitch to A-Rod (my estimate without looking at split screen replays). Jorge grounds out to second to end the inning. 1st and 2nd no outs and only one scores. But, all things considered - scoring on both Schilling and Pedro in the first really isn’t so bad.

Top 2nd: Ortiz walks. Amish Paradise pops out to Jeter. Nixon flies out to Matsui. The Masked Man grounds to Cairo, inning over.

Bottom 2nd: Olerud lines out hard to second. Cairo walks. Lofton hits a soft liner that drops in front of Damon in center. Pedro throws one at the NY logo and in to Jeter. Almost hits him, but just an inside pitch that ran a bit too far in. Jeter hits a deep fly ball to center that almost takes Damon to the track. Cairo tags and advances to 3rd. 1st and 3rd, 2 out. Pedro has fooled around with his 1st and 3rd thingy (never seen him do that, really, but how much do I watch the Sox? almost only when they play the Yanks, so who knows) and is very concerned with Lofton at 1st (couple of throws over). A-Rod K’s looking on 3 and 2. Pedro is near 50 pitches after 2 innings.

Top 3rd: Cabrera singles to left. Matsui makes a pretty nice play to cut it offand hold him to a single. Mueller grounds weakly to Olerud, who tags him - Cabrera at second. Damon breaks his bat with a weak grounder to Cairo, who throws him out. Cabrera to third. Bellhorn loops one to center where Bernie makes the catch. 1-0 Yankees.

Bottom 3rd: Sheff pops out to Cabrera as he almost collides with Manny. Matsui hits a hard grounder to Millar at first, two outs. Bernie grounds to Millar who flips to Pedro, three outs.

Top 4th: Manny hits a high pop out to Bernie to the first out. Ortiz follows with a high pop out to Cairo. Abe Lincoln check swings a slow roller to Lieber who throws him out to end the inning.

Bottom 4th: Posada leads off with a walk. Olerud pops out to Bellhorn for the first out. Cairo flies out to left. Lofton K’s to end the inning. Pedro is at 72 pitches after 4.

Top 5th: Nixon flies out to Matsui. The Masked Man weakly rolls to the 1st base side where Lieber picks it up and throws him out. Cabrera K’s on a pitch low and away and the inning is over.

Bottom 5th: Jeter grounds to short and gets thrown out. A-Rod hits a slow roller to third, Mueller makes a nice play on it but Alex has it beat. Sheff steps out and the calls of Who’s Your Daddy? echo incredibly loudly. Sheff K’s though after a bit of a battle. Matsui K’s after fouling off a few pitches. Pedro is only 9 pitches away from 100.

Top 6th: Mueller leads off with a pop out to the pitchers mound that A-Rod catches. After a loooong at bat, Bernie makes a running catch to make Damon the second out. Bellhorn K’s to end the inning.

Bottom 6th: Bernie flies out to Damon in center. As Pedro goes 3-0 to Jorge, he throws his 100th pitch of the evening. Posada goes on to walk. Olerud drops one into the right field seats - Yankees 3-0! Cairo strikes out and Lofton hits a pop that doesn’t leave the field to make out number 3.

Top 7th: Jeter picks up a tough ground and throws Manny out for the first out. Ortiz singles to right for the second Red Sox hit of the game. Honest Abe grounds to A-Rod who throws to Cairo who throws to Olerud to complete the 6-4-3 double play.

Bottom 7th: Pedro is out, Timlin is in. Jeter grounds out to short. Mueller makes a diving grab to rob A-Rod of at least a double. Sheffield plunks one in front of Manny in left for a base hit. Godzilla drops it in in a similar spot to Sheff. 1st and 2nd, 2 out for Bernie, who flies out to Nixon in right to end the inning. Foulke is warming in the pen.

Top 8th: Nixon singles to right past a diving Cairo to start the inning. Lieber is out after 7 innings, allowing just 3 hits and walking 1. Flash is in. The Masked Man doubles, but Nixon holds at 3rd. 2nd and 3rd, 0 outs. Cabrera grounds to Jeter who throws him out at first. However, Nixon scores. Varitek holds at 2nd. 3-1 Yankees. Mueller grounds out to Cairo and Varitek advances to third. Mariano is on his way with 2 outs and a runner on third to face Damon. Mo fans him looking to end the inning.

Bottom 8th: Posada gets a broken bat single up the middle to start the inning - his first hit of the night. Olerud hits a deep fly to Damon who makes the catch for the first out. Foulke is in. Foulke plunked Cairo on the shoulder with a change up to make it 1st and 2nd with one out for K-Lo, who foul tips out. Jeter walks to load the bases for A-Rod with 2 outs. He flies out to right center, though, so the threat ends. Yankees up 3-1 heading to the 9th with Mariano pitching to Bellhorn, Manny and … Pappi. Er, let’s go with Cookie Monster. I like that one better.

Top 9th: Bellhorn grounds weakly to Olerud for the first out. Manny one hopped it off the wall for a double. On 0-2, Mo blew it by Ortiz. Mo challenged him throughout the at bat and got him on 3 pitches. Amish Paradise is fanned by Mo on a high 96 MPH heater to end the game. Mo rocks so much.

Game over. Yankees win 3-1. Yankees up 2-0.

Great game. The Yankees allowed a total of 5 hits and 1 run while the Red Sox allowed 7 hits and 3 runs. Lieber gets the win, Pedro gets the loss, Mo gets the save.

Schilling vs. Mussina. Yankees win.
Pedro vs. Lieber. Yankees win.

Yankees fans are pretty much the only people who thought this could happen. Sheffield was the only guy on either side to get 2 hits. He also drove in 1. The big hit was the 2 run HR by Olerud off of Pedro in the 6th. Posada was on base. Posada and Jeter both walked twice.

So, we’ve got a day off and then it heats back up at Fenway with Bronson Arrojo going up against Kevin Brown.

Thanks for reading (whoever did).
