Please Mr. Steinbrenner, do not sign Pedro
May 3, 2004
After so much had gone well for the Red Sox so far this season, Pedro opens his mouth. Manny Ramirez has even offered to defer part of his salary to keep the “heart of the team” in Boston.
I, for one, hope they keep the heart in its body. In fact, give him a lifetime contract and make him manager, if he’s so great. He’s only 32 years old and he’s already in trouble. He has God given gifts, but lacks the dedication to training to keep it going for much longer (into his late 30s, that is). He’s not going to be Roger Clemens, who pitched 211.7 innings at 40. Not gonna happen. Comparing Pedro to Roger is disrespectful to Clemens.
So, I hope the Sox take Manny up on his offer and I hope they sign Pedro and keep him.
As for me, if I was making decisions for the Yankees… Pedro Martinez would never don the pinstripes. Personally, I think he lacks class… in one word, he’s a punk. He’s the Anti-Bernie, the Anti-Jeter, the Anti-Mo, the Anti-Paulie and so many others. Underlined by his comments to the press (IE: “Everything is going right for my team right now. I think it is a good time to bring up my contract and call the owners liars! How dare they question my extremely fragile pitching arm?!”) and what happened at the ALCS last year. Add the fact that he calls out dead people (Babe Ruth) who did more for the game then he can hope to accomplish in ten lifetimes and we have a headcase and one that I don’t want in NY.
Still, Mo is killing me!
“He’s not the enemy, he just wears the jersey,” closer Mariano Rivera told the Post.”
Let’s hope this is just a public show of niceness. Write it down. If he signs with the Yankees, my “loathing” of him, as a fan, won’t just disappear. Can he make up for it? Sure. We’re not talking about Hitler here. He’s a baseball player. But, he’s dug a pretty good hole. When Torre accepts him, if Posada accepts him… that’ll play into me accepting him. Rooting for him won’t come easy. And, again… if it was my decision, I’d fire off a thanks, but no thanks to any inquiries from him or his agent, regardless of what he says. Even if he wants to play for free, I don’t want him.
Although I liked David Wells at times, I never forgot what happened when I met him in Boston when I was younger. Damage done. Alas, a blog entry for another day…
